Next Saturday the 21st  is St. George’s day in Ulverston,  here was what happened last year.  There will be a full day of festivities in the town again this year.

Printfest Trail

‘Following on the success of our tenth anniversary celebrations in 2011, we submitted a successful bid to the Arts Council asking for their support over the next two years to develop Printfest. One of the key elements of the bid is to develop a Printfest Trail which will see work exhibited in new venues around the town, including shops and cafes.

We feel it is important that we attract not only purchasers of art to Printfest but also make the event accessible to families who can enjoy the art exhibited without feeling they need to make a purchase, and join in with workshops and demonstrations.

By increasing activity in the town, we will also make it more attractive to cultural tourists and provide a greater benefit to local businesses when visitors to Printfest take the time to walk around Ulverston and visit shops and cafes.

We are holding an exhibition in Natterjacks and are speaking to other shops and businesses in the town.

Finally, I think everyone in Ulverston has been touched by the amazing words and open heart of Alice Pyne and her Bucket List.

Well Team Alice are about to do a mammoth cycle in support of her charity Alice’s Escapes.

We are a team of 8 Cumbrian cyclists who are cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats covering roughly 100 miles a day for 10 days from April 20th – 29th. It’s a challenge most of us have thought of doing at some point and the new charity Alice’s Escapes is such a worthy cause. The charity has been set up by local girl Alice Pyne and her family and will provide complimentary holidays to families with seriously ill children. On day 5, Tuesday 24th April we cycle from Warrington to Ulverston and we hope to arrive at Booths between 4pm and 5pm (ish). There’s going to be a bit of a reception there so the more the merrier, it’d be great to see as many local people turn out as possible as raising awareness of the charity is as important as the fundraising in these early days.

Personally I am swinging between excitement and a ‘what have I got myself into’ type panic. It’s a massive challenge for me but it’s too late to back out now… haha. I’m looking forward to seeing new parts of the country and I’m cycling with a bunch of really great people so if nothing else I’m sure the team spirit will get me through. And of course there’ll be that incredible sense of achievement when we reach John O’Groats.

Well what a glorious week it has been… sadly it is coming to an end now and I believe that snow is actually forecast….. gulp.  It was gorgeous while it lasted and it was great to see some lovely flowers out and signs of spring.

Chris Shaw is running a Half Day Dao Yin workshop in Grizebeck, nr Ulverston this Saturday 31st March. Cost £18, Time 10-1.

Dao Yin is an ancient system of yoga from china, Dao Yin means ‘pulling and stretching the body and breath’. On Saturday we will be using 9 Dao Yin exercises to develop a sense of connectivity and flow.

Well, I have quite a few items to share with you today, the Go Fridays are catching on now which is great.

Paul Kingsnorth is starting his scything courses again, they are fantastic and anyone who is remotely curious will love them.  You can get details here and below is a little video where Paul is demonstrating his craft.  He also sells the Austrian scythes as well and will make sure that you get one that fits perfectly for you.

There is a Facebook Group that has been set up because there is a serious problem regarding cars speeding along Mountbarrow Road by Croftlands Infants and Nursery School.

Message from the group:
There have been quite a few incidents where parents and children have nearly been caught in the path of an oncoming car, when crossing the road from Oakwood Drive to Mountbarrow Road which is a blind corner.

The school has a very competent crossing patrol, but even this has its limits, as visibility of oncoming traffic is very poor. Also there is no patrol at lunch times, when nursery and pre-school children are picked up and nothing in place for anyone else who would like to cross the road at any other time, making it extremely dangerous.

We would like to see in place traffic calming measures, something that will make the drivers slow down as just lights and signs do not seem to be enough.

Please support us and join. If you would like to leave a post regarding an experience you have had or you just wish to back us up with a few words about this dangerous corner, please do, as a recent report in the Northwest Evening mail stated that a police spokesman did not think that there was a problem with speeding on this road. Having spoken to a lot of parents and residents, we know there is a problem.

Printfest and …… All New for 2012….. The Printfest Trail

Printfest 2012 will take place at the Coronation Hall on 4-6 May. 2012 will also see the first Printfest Trail in Ulverston with art exhibited in shops around the town from 23 April to 6 May.

The Printfest exhibition and sale of original prints brings in over 1,200 visitors to Ulverston each year, giving you a unique opportunity to tell people about your business, your shop or your service.

Printfest has been fortunate in securing funding from the Arts Council for the 2012 event. However, for this funding to continue, we also need to generate earned income. Advertising in our catalogue will not only bring your business to the attention of our visitors but will help to secure the future of the event.

The first item today is not a happy one though. I was upset to hear of the mindless destruction through the night last night… Thursday night around 12.30- 1.00 am when someone put a brick through the window of Working Class Heroes. This mindless act of destruction means that Tom is forking out his hard earned money for nothing.

Tom is offering £100 reward for anyone who has information leading to the conviction of the culprit. The photo is of Tom, his partner and their young baby who I’m sure would have preferred not to have thrown money out of the window.

Well it’s a fairly gloomy day out there today but I do think spring is round the corner now….  the crocuses are up and the snow drops have been around for a few weeks.  The air has a bit of a spring feel to it…. Bring it on!

Bigland Hall Equestrian had some exciting times recently.  Not only have they been nominated for the Equestrian Social Media Awards, but they have also been filmed for the BBC One Show.

The whole story is basically about the government not including certain NVQs/work based diplomas in school league tables anymore, so children from schools that haven’t got large amounts of money behind them might miss out on doing these diplomas, especially students who don’t work well in the classroom.

As these courses are the foundation of the equine industry, it’d really feel the hit if this proposal gets passed. It might also devalue qualifications which people already have.

Success Report!

Some good news to cheer us all up….
