Not Just Swine Flu Flu is a virus which can affect people in different ways and to different degrees – it mutates and changes very easily. Having a temperature and a cold (runny nose and sneezing a lot) plus aching joints is a sign that it is probably flu – occasionally people mistake the common cold for flu an easy mistake to make especially if you feel that you might not get the required level of sympathy if you just call your condition a common cold (which is also a virus).
According to a newspaper or was it the radio? Around 8000 people die from flu (ordinary flu) each year, as has happened with swine flu these people tend to be in poor health already. Herbs can be very helpful in boosting your immune system, the one everyone seems to have heard of is Echinacea – a herb originally found in North America. There have been a number of clinical trials supporting its use in the treatment of the common cold and flu reducing the time of the illness from 7 – 10 days to 3-4 days. Something a little closer to home and also very effective is the common elderberry – (now is the time to harvest them). A syrup or tincture made from elderberries is powerfully anti viral helping to protect you from most viruses and shortening your period of illness if you succumb. Clinical trials carried out on avian flu sufferers found it to be very effective against this strain of flu and swine flu is strangely similar so herbal opinion suspects that the humble elderberry will be equally effective in protecting you against this variety of flu as well.
DELICIOUS ELDERBERRY SYRUP Strip the ripe berries off the stalks (using a fork can be helpful) Add a cup of water, cover and simmer for 20 – 25 minutes. Strain and press through a sieve or muslin (tea towel) Measure the liquid and return it to the pan plus 1lb sugar for each 1 pint of juice Add 12 cloves, one inch of sliced fresh ginger and a piece of cinnamon stick for each pint of juice Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Then boil for 5 minutes. Allow to cool, strain and store in well sealed, clean glass bottles some where cool (the fridge is good) To drink treat as a cordial and dilute to taste, it may be drunk hot or cold. ENJOY
